Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying held a press conference on May 14, 2014.
Hua Chunying started the press conference with the following announcement:
At the invitation of President Xi Jinping, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Atambayev will pay a state visit to China from May 18 to 21 and attend the 4th Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) Summit in Shanghai.
At the invitation of the government of the State of Israel and Ms. Vesna Pusic, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia, Vice Premier of the State Council Ms. Liu Yandong will pay an official visit to these two countries from May 18 to 26 and attend the first Israel Innovation Conference.
Hua Chunying then briefed the journalists on Foreign Minister Wang Yi's phone conversation with Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.
Wang Yi briefed his counterpart on the actual situation of maritime friction between China and Vietnam, and emphasized that the Chinese enterprise is carrying out normal drilling activities in China's Xisha Islands and its contiguous zone which have already begun ten years ago. The violent disruptions and ramming by a large number of Vietnamese vessels are why the situation has become tense. What the Vietnamese has done has violated China's sovereignty and jurisdiction, run counter to a series of international agreements safeguarding maritime security, and undermined peace and stability of the South China Sea. Wang Yi said that China's position on safeguarding its legitimate sovereign rights and interests is firm, clear and will not change. China and Vietnam are having communication that is needed on the current situation. We urge the Vietnamese side to calm down, respect China's sovereignty and jurisdiction and refrain from further complicating and aggravating the situation. China also hopes that ASEAN member countries can have a clear understanding of the basic facts of this incident, and together with China continue to safeguard peace and stability of the South China Sea.
Marty said that China is an important pivot in maintaining regional peace, stability and prosperity. Indonesia takes no side on the sovereignty issue of the South China Sea, and is willing to work with China to safeguard regional peace and stability of the South China Sea.
Q: India's ambassador to Argentina said that Argentina is likely to become the 6th member of BRICS. What is China's response to that?
A: Whether more members will be added to the BRICS needs to be thoroughly discussed by all member states and decided on the basis of consensus through consultation. The cooperation among BRICS countries is open and inclusive. China will always support BRICS countries' efforts in enhancing dialogue and cooperation with other emerging market countries and developing countries.
Q: Yesterday, Special Representative of the US President and Secretary of Treasury Jacob Lew visited China. Could you give us some details on the talks between him and Chinese officials?
A: As you said, On May 13, Special Representative of the US President and Secretary of Treasury Jacob Lew visited China. Premier Li Keqiang and Vice Premier Wang Yang met and held talks with him separately. Both sides had in-depth exchanges on China-US relationship and major economic issues of common concern.
Chinese leaders pointed out that to enhance cooperation between China and the US is in line with the interests of the two countries and the world. Both sides should earnestly implement the consensus reached by two heads of state and stay on the right track of building a new model of major-country relations. China and the US should give full play to the mechanisms of dialogue between the two sides, including a new round of Strategic and Economic Dialogue, truly respect and accommodate each other's core interests and ensure the sound and steady improvement of bilateral ties.
The Chinese side introduced the main targets of China's economic reform. China and the US are highly complementary economically. Common interests between the two sides far outweigh disputes. Both sides should deepen the practical cooperation in areas like trade and investment, energy and environment and climate change, and push forward the process of negotiation on a bilateral investment treaty. China hopes that the US can relax their export control on civilian-use hi-tech products to China, and provide a fair and level playing field for Chinese enterprises seeking to invest in the US.
Jacob Lew said that the US is committed to enhancing exchanges and cooperation with China and thanks to the concerted efforts of the two sides, bilateral relations have been deepened and consolidated. What China has achieved through reform is encouraging. The US stands ready to work closely with China to achieve more progress through the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue and have close cooperation on climate change, energy and other fields. The US takes the implementation of 2010 IMF reform proposals as its priority policy target and supports China's hosting of this year's APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.
Both sides also exchanged views on issues including the current world economic situation, major economic policies of the two countries and global and regional trade.
Q: Shangri-La Dialogue will be held in Singapore by the end of this month. Will China send its delegation to this event?
A: So far, I do not have any information on this. Shangri-La Dialogue is a forum for multilateral security dialogue. I hope it can function as what it is created to be and make positive contributions to increasing mutual trust between countries in the region and safeguarding regional security.
Q: Some extremist group released a video online and claimed responsibility for the violent terrorist attack at the Urumqi South Railway Station on April 30. What is China's response to that?
A: The video you mentioned still needs to be verified. There are some extreme and violent terrorist organizations that are ready to take whatever measures they can to collude with internal and external forces and launch violent terrorist activities in Xinjiang or other regions in China, in an attempt to undermine China's ethnic unity and social stability. We hope that everyone can see through these organizations' nature and intention, and support the efforts made by the Chinese government in combating violent terrorist activities, safeguarding social stability and order, and protecting people's property and safety.
Before concluding the press conference, Hua Chunying announced that a briefing for Chinese and foreign media will be held at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning. Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping will brief the journalists on relevant arrangements for the 4th CICA Summit and take questions. Journalists are welcome to attend the briefing.
